It is the district headquarters of\u00a0Puri district and is situated on the\u00a0Bay of Bengal, 60 kilometres (37\u00a0mi) south of the state capital of\u00a0Bhubaneswar. It is also known as\u00a0<em>Sri Jagannatha Dhama<\/em>after the 12th-century\u00a0Jagannath Temple\u00a0located in the city. It is one of the original\u00a0Char Dham\u00a0pilgrimage sites. Puri is known by several names since the ancient times, and was locally known as &#8220;Sri Kshetra&#8221; and the Jagannath temple is known as &#8220;Badadeula&#8221;.<\/p>\r\n<p>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_empty_space]<div class=\"qodef-shortcode qodef-m  qodef-section-title qodef-alignment--left \">\n\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"qodef-m-title\" >\n\t\t\t\t\tClimate\t\t\t<\/h2>\n\t\t<p class=\"qodef-m-text\" >The city has moderate and tropical climate. Humidity is fairly high throughout the year. The temperature during summer touches a maximum of 36 \u00b0C (97 \u00b0F) and during winter it is 17 \u00b0C (63 \u00b0F). The art form is attributed to Balaram Das, a poet who lived in the 14th century. Sculptures of various gods and famous people are now created in sand by amateur artists. These are temporary in nature as they get washed away by waves. This art form has gained international fame in recent years.[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][vc_column width=&#8221;1\/4&#8243;][vc_column_text]Appliqu\u00e9 art, which is a stitching-based craft unlike embroidery, was pioneered by Hatta Maharana of Pipili. It is widely used in Puri, both for decoration of the deities and for sale. \u00a0The appliqu\u00e9 works are brightly coloured and patterned fabric in the form of canopies, umbrellas, drapery, carry bags, flags, coverings of dummy horses and cows, and other household textiles; these are marketed in Puri.[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][vc_column width=&#8221;1\/4&#8243;][vc_column_text]Patachitra artform is known for its intricate details as well as mythological narratives and folktales inscribed in it. Pattachitra is one of the ancient artworks of Odisha, originally created for ritual use and as souvenirs for pilgrims to Puri, as well as other temples in Odisha.
